Summary of the Poem "Geography Lesson"
This beautiful creation “Geography Lesson,” is penned by Zulfikar Ghose. “In this poem, the poet describes that when he boards a jet plane and looks out of its window, he explains that the way in which the city was developed was very important. It appears haphazard and inevitable.
In the second stanza, the poet explains what happens when a jet plane reaches at the thousand feet in the sky. The poet understands the geographical theory as well as how cities were developed on the banks of rivers. Only this logic of geography can reveal why the valleys are so populated and why more and more people are settled in these places. It is that place where land and water are attracted by the people.

When the jet sprang into the sky
it was clear why the city
had developed the way it had,
seeing it scaled six inches to the mile.

it was clear why the country
had cities where the rivers ran
and why the valleys are populated.

Explanation
In the second stanza, the poet says that when the jet reached a height of ten thousand feet, it realized why the cities were built this way. The poet also wants to find out why the valleys are so populated in the areas through which the rivers flow. When the jet rose six mile high,
it was clear the earth was round
and that it had more sea than land.
But it was difficult to understand
that the man on the land found
causes to hate each other, to build

In this stanza, the poet says that when the jet is reached six miles above the land. After that it becomes clear that earth is round and sea occupies more space than land on the earth. But it is not possible to understand why people start hating each other. His hatred would grow so much that he would drag walls across countries and even snatch someone’s life.
